Update 2012
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Federal Government has stopped all payment on start-up grants to all charter schools in Oregon this past summer. We are now without a significant funding source. We are currently working with the Oregon Department of Education and the Portland School District and will keep the community updated if the situation may change. We are open to pursuing funding from private sources, so please email

. Our hope is to open in the fall of 2012, yet at this point we do not have a significant funds source and are unable to open unless the Federal Funding gets reinstated.
Bridges needs community members who are willing to volunteer and help our organization through this difficult time. Please think about helping us bring Waldorf education to Portland's high school students. If you are interested please email Bridges at

Golden Leaf has changed its name to BRIDGES
The Bridges Public Charter High School, formerly Golden Leaf, is a unique, free public high school located within the Portland Public School district. Bridges offers a rigorous and dynamic academic experience, which is grounded in an educational philosophy inspired by Waldorf methods. The school will have an experiential, hands-on approach to learning in the core subjects of Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Foreign Language. It will also offer extensive course content in the areas of fine art, applied and practical arts, music, theater, and dance. Outdoor education is an integral part of Bridges’ philosophy. Bi-annual backpack and camping trips, as well as day trips to local nature preserves are an essential part of the curriculum. Another unique aspect of Bridges' course work is its senior year service project, which offers opportunities to work within the Portland area or to travel abroad and give back to society as part of the learning experience.
Waldorf methods are inspired by the educational philosophy developed in the early 2oth century by Rudolph Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and social thinker, who developed a school for the children of employees of the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory in 1919. The Waldorf approach emphasizes the role of imagination, creativity, analytical and critical thinking in learning. The goals of this approach are to provide young people with the skills to develop into unique and capable human beings with a solid moral grounding and a life-long love of learning.
There are currently 995 Waldorf schools located in sixty countries throughout the world. Bridges was initially planning to open in the fall of 2012, yet due to Federal Funding changes, we are forced to delay opening. Our anticipated enrollment for our opening semester is 100 students; made up of both freshmen and sophomores. We will add a grade each successive year with a full enrollment of 200 students in four grade levels.
